Taoyuan County Commissioner Eric Chu (朱立倫) yesterday gave a presentation on Taiwan's aerotropolis project in Xiamen, China, to attract Chinese or Taiwanese investors operating in China to the massive plan.
Chu arrived in Xiamen on Friday to attend China's Strait Forum in his capacity as a vice chairman of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). The politician did not set aside his duties as Taoyuan county chief while in China. His presentation of the aviation city plan at his hotel in Xiamen attracted reporters from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Touting the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport as the key access point to Taiwan, Chu said he was working to introduce the massive aerotropolis project yo potential investors on both sides of the Strait.
The aerotropolis to be built around Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is one of the country's major development projects and is expected to attract NT$1 trillion (US$29.6 billion) in foreign investment. It is scheduled for completion by the end of 2020. The Strait Forum is a platform for exchanges between the private sectors in Taiwan and China and complements an annual forum between the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party. China's Taiwan Affairs Office and the Fujian provincial government are sponsoring the forum.
The Democratic Progressive Party said it was part of China's "united front" (統戰) tactics to spread its influence over Taiwan.
